Mission Statement
The Center for Environmental Health Sciences seeks to stimulate interdisciplinary research in environmental health sciences and provide a thrust toward education and outreach to the public, industry, local and state government in Kentucky. This Center, co-directed by Russell A. Prough, Ph.D. (Biochemistry & Molecula Biology), Steven R. Myers, Ph.D. (Pharmacology & Toxicology) has a strong group of faculty interested in many biochemical, chemical, and genetic biomarkers as human health indicators of exposure. The collaboration of these researchers from several departments within the School of Medicine and College of Arts & Sciences has resulted in a $751,571, three-year Center Development grants awarded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences. Subsequently, the Center has established a VA-funded "Center for the Study of Environmental Insults to Humans" focused on endocrine disruptors. The CEHS plans on establishing its multidisciplinary research program focused on environmental exposure of workers and residents in West Louisville. Particular attention will be placed on assessing the risk of exposure to chemicals of underserved and underrepresented individuals, as well as industrial workers in the City. The CEHS will also prepare allocations for pre- and postdoctoral training grants and program project grants in addition to increasing number of individual investigator grants in environmental health sciences in the coming year.
